Elephant in a Kenyan landscape

Drone and Aerial Videography in Kenya

Drone and Aerial Videography in Kenya

Drone and aerial filming in Kenya by KCAA-licensed pilots, under our own KCAA operator certificate. For documentaries, NGO, conservation and corporate films.

Elephant in a Kenyan landscape

Aerial footage shows what ground cameras cannot: the scale of a landscape, the shape of a conservancy, a river changing course after a flood, a farm or a project site in context. Afrovo Studios adds drone filming to documentaries, NGO films and corporate productions across Kenya. We hold a Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) Remote Operator Certificate, and every drone pilot on our team holds a KCAA Remote Pilot Licence.

What we use aerial filming for

  • Conservation and landscapes: habitats, corridors, rangelands and wildlife from a respectful distance. See conservation and wildlife filming.
  • NGO programmes: water points, farms, schools, clinics and flood recovery, shown in their setting. See NGO video production.
  • Documentaries: establishing shots and sequences that give a story its sense of place. See documentary production.
  • Corporate and ESG: sites, estates, facilities and supply chains. See corporate video production.
  • Events: outdoor launches and gatherings, where permitted.

Flying legally in Kenya

Drone filming in Kenya is regulated, and we plan every flight within the rules. As of September 2026:

  • Drones must be registered with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), and commercial work needs a licensed remote pilot and an operator certificate held by a Kenyan-registered entity.
  • The Kenya Film Commission lists security clearance followed by KCAA approval for filming flights. The usual height limit is 400 feet.
  • National parks charge a drone fee per drone, per day, per park under Kenya Wildlife Service fees in force since October 2025, on top of filming and entry fees.
  • Conservancies and county-run reserves, including the Maasai Mara, set their own rules, and some do not allow drones at all.
  • New drone regulations were published in March 2026 (Legal Notice 40 of 2026). We confirm with KCAA which rules apply to each project.

Afrovo operates under its own KCAA Remote Operator Certificate, and all our drone pilots are KCAA-licensed. We still secure the approvals each location requires for every flight. Read more in our guide to filming permits in Kenya.

Wildlife and communities come first

  • We keep a respectful distance from wildlife and stop flying if animals react.
  • We do not fly over homes, schools or people without permission, and we tell communities in advance when we plan to fly nearby.
  • On security-sensitive conservation shoots, we agree in advance what may be filmed and shown. See our consent, safeguarding and AI policy.

For visiting crews

Bringing a drone into Kenya means import approval as well as flight approvals, and fixers report this can take several weeks. Because we are a certified Kenyan operator with licensed pilots, visiting crews can have their aerial footage flown by our team instead, and skip the import process. See production services for visiting crews.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should we plan drone filming?

As early as possible. Security clearance and location permissions take time, and some parks and conservancies decide case by case.

Can you fly in national parks?

Only with Kenya Wildlife Service approval and the drone fee paid, on top of KCAA requirements. Some areas do not allow drones at all, and we will tell you early if that affects your plan.

Are your pilots licensed?

Yes. Afrovo holds a KCAA Remote Operator Certificate, and all our drone pilots hold KCAA Remote Pilot Licences.

Can drone footage be added to a film you are already making for us?

Yes. Aerial filming is usually most cost-effective as part of a wider shoot, so the same trip produces the ground and aerial footage.

What does drone filming add to the budget?

Permits, park drone fees and pilot time. We list them separately in the quote. See our video production cost guide.
